Between East and West.
Discovering Xanthi in the Late Ottoman Era
On Sunday, March 15, 2026, Historiotopias will conduct a historical tour on the theme of the Ottoman period of Xanthi. As part of this tour, we will walk through various parts of the city and especially the traditional settlement and discover certain aspects of the history of this period. In this way, we will be given the opportunity to learn about the most important events and understand the conditions that contributed to the development of the city in the late 19th century and the early years of the 20th. We will reconstruct aspects of the social and cultural life of the residents of the Greek Orthodox Community, we will see how the national antagonisms of this period manifested themselves in the region and we will understand the factors that contributed to the emergence of Xanthi into a dynamic urban center of that era. We will ultimately illuminate an important period of time in the city, the signs of which we find daily in front of us and which undoubtedly have many interesting stories to tell us. Through the highlighting of the history of the traditional settlement, we better understand its value and have the opportunity to discuss the problems it faces today.
